Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth took place on August 24 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a girl. Aunt Denise was a nurse, who was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used as a tool for activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family was for many generations. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma inspire her later to make a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with degrees in English and African American studies. While she was still in school, DuVernay was interested in creating for the broadcast media. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of a member of the jury and look through their trash. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy and, following her decision to not pursue the field of journalism, she was able to move to the world of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. In this role, she launched her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
